Brothers ElectroPops Heading to State KY Pitch

Owensboro, KY (04/22/2019) — Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) student Prem Patel, and his brother, Owensboro Innovation Academy (OIA) student, Krishna Patel, earned second place in the area's regional KY Pitch competition with their "ElectroPops" product. The brothers developed this healthy frozen treat designed to replace electrolytes and promote hydration. They noticed that most sporting events had plentiful snack options during athletic events but not all those options were fortifying. They even sought to make their product environmentally friendly by utilizing seeded wooden sticks that will grow if planted.

Prem is a graduate of Apollo High School and is a first year student at OCTC. Prem has completed the EMT program at OCTC and is pursuing a major in Business. Krishna will graduate from OIA in 2020 and plans to attend the University of Kentucky and major in Engineering/Physics. Accompanying the team as faculty representatives for coaching and support are Mary Kinney and Dr. Bob Glenn.

"KY PITCH is an invaluable learning experience for students to enhance their entrepreneurial skills and exposes them to real world problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. It also provides students with the opportunity to actually start a business from the ground up" added Kinney.

The Patel brothers are taking their "ElectroPops" and moving on to the state level competition with the KY Pitch finals scheduled for April 27 at Centre College in Danville.

About Ky Pitch

KY Pitch, is Kentucky's largest collegiate business pitch competition formerly known as Idea State U, regional competitions were held across the commonwealth in March.

Though the pitch competition is expected to undergo additional changes in 2020, the 2019 edition will look very similar to the events held over the past 11 years. As in previous years, winning teams will be selected within two sectors: Business Plan and Business Model. The winning team in the Business Plan category will receive a $7,500 cash prize, with runners-up earning $5,000 and third place receiving $3,500. The winning Business Model team will take home $5,000, followed by $3,500 for second place and $1,500 for the third place team.

More importantly than monetary awards, winning teams will come away with an opportunity to build their business ideas into real companies. Winners will receive office space at a local incubator or community workspace, mentorship and membership to local entrepreneurial events for up to one year, as well as legal counsel, accounting services, marketing and design services and more.
