Honoring Dr. Boarman and the Heart of OCTC's Veterinary Technology Program

Celebrating Excellence During Veterinary Appreciation Week

Owensboro, KY (06/24/2025) — For Veterinary Appreciation Week, we are incredibly proud to celebrate an extraordinary leader, mentor, and educator who stands at the heart of the OCTC Veterinary Technology Program: Dr. Laura Boarman. Her impact on students and the veterinary community extends far beyond the classroom walls, touching lives and shaping careers with her passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Dr. Boarman's influence reaches into every corner of veterinary medicine, but perhaps most importantly, into the lives of every student fortunate enough to learn from her guidance and expertise.

A Passion for Student Success

When asked what she loves most about teaching future veterinary technicians, Dr. Boarman's face lights up as she shares her favorite moments: "I love many aspects of my career, but my favorite is going out into the clinics and seeing our students putting into practice what they are learning in the classroom. It is so rewarding to see their confidence grow."

This joy in witnessing student development and success reveals the genuine heart she brings to her work every single day. For Dr. Boarman, teaching isn't just a profession-it's a calling to nurture the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Real-World Experience Meets Educational Excellence

Dr. Boarman's approach to education is deeply rooted in her extensive experience as a practicing veterinarian. This unique perspective allows her to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application in ways that truly prepare students for their careers.

"I try to approach each class by asking myself, what I needed from a technician when I was in practice," she explains. "My mission is to produce technicians who are equipped not only with the knowledge, but the soft skills needed to be an asset to any practice. I am very proud of the feedback we receive from our colleagues in the field. I feel confident when I say OCTC Vet Tech Alumni are a cut above."

This philosophy has created a program that doesn't just teach technical skills-it develops complete professionals ready to make meaningful contributions from day one in their careers.

Graduating with Purpose and Professionalism

Under Dr. Boarman's leadership, students don't simply graduate with knowledge; they graduate with purpose, professionalism, and real-world readiness. The reputation of OCTC Veterinary Technology graduates speaks volumes about the foundation she has built and continues to strengthen.

Her students enter the veterinary field equipped not only with clinical expertise but also with the confidence, communication skills, and a professional demeanor that make them invaluable team members in any practice setting.

Words of Wisdom That Last a Lifetime

Perhaps one of the most powerful aspects of Dr. Boarman's mentorship is the wisdom she shares with her students. One piece of advice she offers to all students has become a guiding principle that follows them throughout their careers:

"Remember your why and know your worth."

This simple but profound message resonates in every exam room, surgery suite, and client interaction her graduates encounter. It serves as both a reminder of their purpose and an affirmation of their value as veterinary professionals.

A Legacy of Excellence

OCTC's Vet Tech Faculty, Professor Jacqueline Jackson, commented, "Dr. Boarman's impact on the OCTC Veterinary Technology Program and the broader veterinary field cannot be overstated. Through her leadership, countless students have discovered not just their career path but also their passion for animal care and their confidence in their abilities."

"The veterinary practices throughout our region have benefited immensely from the skilled, professional, and compassionate technicians who have graduated from her program. Her influence extends through every graduate who goes on to provide exceptional care to animals and support to pet families in our community", added Instructor Tara Groves, also part of the OCTC Vet Tech team.
