OCTC Announces Common Read Selection for Fall 2019
We Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride
Owensboro, KY (07/01/2019) — The Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC) Common Reading selection for the fall 2019 semester will be, We Are Called to Rise, by Laura McBride.
The novel is set in Las Vegas, Nevada and follows four divergent narrators with interwoven plot lines. The characters include CASA workers, a young veteran with PTSD, a divorcee, and an immigrant family. The central cataclysmic event in the novel was inspired by a real life event the author only knew of, but was deeply affected by, and used it as a catalyst for this fictional novel.
Laura McBride lives in Las Vegas and teaches English at the College of Southern Nevada. She graduated with a degree in American Studies from Yale University. She is the author of the novels We Are Called to Rise and In the Midnight Room. McBride did a residency at Yaddo, the artists' retreat, and published We Are Called to Rise, her first novel, at 53.
"McBride has written an urgent morality tale for our times in the form of this poignant gripping debut" -Library Journal, starred review
