OCTC HOSTS ANNUAL SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENT

Owensboro, KY (11/10/2017) — November 10, 2017 - (Owensboro, KY) Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) hosted the 24th annual BBQ Capital of the World Speech & Debate Tournament on the main campus November 3-4, 2017. Fourteen college and universities from Kentucky, Tennessee, Indianapolis, Michigan, Illinois and Kansas participated in the tournament. OCTC earned first place in the Community College Division and Berea College won the overall University Sweepstakes Award and the Debate Sweepstakes Award.

OCTC student speakers earned several awards: Jon Goodwin earned an eleventh placed speaker award, and Jesse Hagan teamed with Sharon Richling to earn a seventh-place speaker award in the NPDA Novice Division.

Sharon Richling, and high school sophomore Shaffer Camp, teamed up to earn third place awards in Impromptu Counseling and Impromptu Weathercasting. Jon Goodwin and Jesse Hagan placed in the finals of the Weathercasting Division, and Zachary Hickey was named the top novice in Informative Speaking.

OCTC president Dr. Scott Williams helped to welcome guests and distribute awards at the tournament. He added that speech and debate is "a truly excellent way to prepare our students for life and successful careers."
