OCTC NEW HOME OF AMTEC-Next Generation

Owensboro, KY (04/05/2018) — How far-fetched is it to think that international competitors could work together to develop a training solution that goes beyond the limitation of state lines and competing company interests? That is exactly how AMTEC, the Automotive Manufacturing Technical Education Collaborative (AMTEC), was developed. Employees from major companies such as Ford, GM, Nissan, and Toyota, to name a few, actually sat down together in the same room and developed a consensus around the skill standards needed by their technicians.

AMTEC is a multi-state collaboration of more than 70 industry and educational partners seeking to prepare highly-skilled technicians for work in the advanced manufacturing and automobile manufacturing industries. AMTEC is a "turnkey" solution that offers a full array of services including: industry-led maintenance certification assessments; industry-certified, nationally validated online competency-based curriculum; diagnostic tools, and AMTEC Manufacturing System Simulator training equipment. AMTEC utilizes a continuous improvement process, led by industry partners, to foster evidence-based decisions that guide updates and enhancements of its curricula and assessment tools.

KCTCS served as the lead partner and fiscal agent for AMTEC since its beginning in 2004. When the National Science Foundation grant which funded the project ended in January 31, 2018, KCTCS made a commitment to ensure that AMTEC continues and is around for a very long time. OCTC stepped up to take the lead on this project seeing the advantage in developing relationships with the automotive and manufacturing partners that benefit from AMTEC.

The refreshed project is referred to as AMTEC-Next Generation, and it has a new leadership team in place. This new team of OCTC's Cindy Fiorella, Jason Simon, Mike Rodgers, and Sheri Plain officially assumed the reins in February 2018. They hit the ground running and are committed to working closely with industry and college partners.

"We are excited to have this project at OCTC. The strong leadership team that we have in place will ensure its continued success" added Scott Williams, OCTC President.

While the AMTEC is now housed at Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC), it is still a national effort. For example, in the past two months the new AMTEC-Next Generation team has worked with Nissan in Tennessee, Toyota in Mississippi and Texas, and the Center of Excellence for Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing in Washington.

It is important to note that AMTEC has always been and always will remain a 100% employer driven, multi-state collaboration. For more information on AMTEC, please contact AMTEC@kctcs.edu.
