OCTC Offering Social Work Classes for Transfer

Owensboro, KY (12/09/2020) — Owensboro Community & Technical College is offering two online social work courses for the spring semester. Introduction to Social Services is a three credit hour course with a lab and provides an overview of the programs and challenges faced by professionals in the field. The second course, Crisis Intervention, is a three hour course which focuses on intervention theory, suicide prevention and risk assessment techniques.

"While we do not offer social work as a degree, we are happy to be able to get the entry level courses offered locally by experienced professionals. These courses will transfer to Brescia or WKU, so student are able to maximize their options" added Dr. Veena Sallan, Chief Academic Officer.

The courses are taught by Cori Douglas and Amanda Greenwell, both currently licensed and working in the field.

Cori Douglas is currently serving as the clinical supervisor for Sunrise Children's Services and is a part time therapist at St Joe's Peace Mission. She earned her undergraduate degree from Transylvania University and a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky. Douglas has practiced clinical social work and maintains licensure for the state of Kentucky. Most recently, she graduated from the Greater Owensboro Chamber's Leadership Owensboro 2020 class.

Amanda Greenwell is currently serving Owensboro Health Regional Hospital as Therapist and Project Manager for the Intensive Outpatient Program. Prior to this she served as an Outpatient therapist at River Valley Behavioral Health and was a member of the Forensic Evaluation Team. Greenwell earned her undergraduate degree in Social Work and her Master's degree in Social Work from Western Kentucky University- Owensboro. Upon completing two years of supervision she took the Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) exam and obtained the Kentucky LCSW license she currently holds today. She also currently holds a Temporary Certified Alcohol and Drug Licensure and is in supervision to become a fully Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Greenwell is an OCTC Alumni.

Dr. Scott Williams, OCTC President added, "We are thrilled to be able to offer these opportunities to our students. The courses are offered by practicing professionals and set the students up well toward a career path in social work. The transfer paths are aligned so students can transfer seamlessly."

New students can sign up in person at the START Center, located in the upper level of the Campus Center, on the Main Campus at 4800 New Hartford Road, open M-Th 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. For a virtual or scheduled appointment new students may email octc.startcenter@kctcs.edu, or call 270-686-4522.
