OCTC receives Grant from Julian-Carver Family Foundation

Owensboro, KY (11/21/2023) — The OCTC Foundation, Inc. today announced the receipt of a $5,000 grant from the Julian-Carver Family Foundation, Inc. of Versailles, Kentucky. These funds will support TECH-X 2024, a project designed to provide accelerated, flexible training through hands-on, project-based learning to historically underrepresented populations of students who may not consider college an option. Twenty-six participating students will earn up to four multi-craft certifications along a pathway to several traditional advanced manufacturing and skilled trades programs offered by OCTC. The funding will support the project's goal to increase the number of students who earn higher education credentials and enter the workforce. The grant period is from November 2023 to December 2024.

OCTC President Dr. Scott Williams commented, "We are very grateful to the Julian-Carver Family Foundation to receive this award and offer this career path opportunity to more students. TECH X is a great option for students who want to start on a career path in advanced manufacturing."

OCTC's Tech X initiative is a multi-craft technologist program offering hands-on training in a real-world, industrial environment. TechX offers hands-on construction, fabrication, fitting, welding, and manufacturing training in a real-world, self-paced, industrial environment. The classes are built on project-based coursework to allow students to move ahead once a particular skill is mastered. It encourages the students to develop those technical and analytical thinking skills that contribute to workflow and production output, skills needed in most entry-level manufacturing positions today. Participants will have opportunities to work independently and in teams with problem-based scenarios related to the manufacturing processes.

The Julian-Carver Family Foundation was established in 2018 to support education in the southern region of the United States to enable students to persist and succeed. The grant program is focused on ways colleges help students attain certificates, diplomas, or degrees. The foundation's commitment is to help students achieve academic success and move into rewarding careers. For the past five years, the foundation has funded proposals from community and technical colleges across Kentucky. More information on the grant program can be found at jcfamfd.org.
