OCTC Recognizes Surg Tech Week

Melissa McIntyre

Owensboro, KY (09/20/2019) — In honor of Surgical Technologists week Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) salutes Melissa McIntyre, an alumnus and an adjunct faculty member in the program.

In 2008, Melissa enrolled in the Surgical Technology program at OCTC. After graduation, she went to work as a Certified Surgical Technologist for Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and maintains a PRN status there to date.

She returned to OCTC in 2013 as a part-time instructor for the program. Program Coordinator Zara Basham added, "Without her, I couldn't do it. Although she would never ask for applause, I wanted you to know that she truly is the backbone of this program."

Melissa selflessly gives her time and is committed to the success of all the students. Basham added, "I appreciate the chance every day to work with her. Watching her grow in this profession and instilling her passion for the job back into our students has been one of my greatest pleasures."

Surgical technologists (ST) serve as patient advocates by preventing infections before, during, and after procedures. STs serve as the "right hand" to the surgeon, working diligently behind-the-scenes to ensure patient quality and safety. STs manage complex tasks ranging from scrubbing and maintaining sterility to keeping count of all surgical instruments to monitoring the surgical field. Because every little detail matters in the operating room, not only do surgical technologists need to understand the surgical procedure being performed, they also need to anticipate both the patient's and surgeon's needs to ensure that each maneuver is performed as smoothly as possible.
