OCTC's ELC Impacting the Community Through Student Projects

Owensboro, KY (12/02/2021) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) Experiential Learning Center (ELC) sponsors service learning projects. Dr. Meredith Skaggs' COM 181 students participated in a project entitled "The $100 Solution". The task was for the seven teams of students to research and select a local non-profit, determine a specific need and develop a plan to impact that need with a budget of $100 or less.

One team selected the Wendell Foster Center, a multi-service agency supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, but is also a comprehensive service provider capable of supporting an array of individuals in need by offering outpatient therapy, residential living, community living, an assistive technology lending library, transportation services, and various support programs.

The students designed ornaments for the "angel tree" and purchased the tree topper. The ornaments were designed to look like a present, and listed the requested items from the Wendell Foster Center clients and were hand cut by the students. Lily Fitzgerald a student participant shared, " This project made me look at Christmas differently, that a piece of paper can change a lot of lives".

Reflection is a critical piece of experiential learning Maddie Barrow added, "In the future, after learning how small things can make a difference I hope to contribute to other non-profits in the future." "The next time, when you're asked to help in some small way, remember how much good one small thing can do."

The materials for the project were provided with Department of Education Title III grant funding.
