OCTC's Experience Nursing day

Owensboro, KY (09/09/2021) — Owensboro Community & Technical College will hold an Experience Nursing day for local high school students who may be interested in pursuing the nursing profession upon high school graduation.

The half-day event will be held on September 24, 2021 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Students attending will participate in hands-on activities including: baseline patient assessment, basic nursing skills, and development of a simple care plan. Nurse educators will be on hand to explore nursing career options and cover best practices to prepare for applying to competitive nursing programs.

OCTC President Dr. Scott Williams added, This is a great opportunity for students to see if nursing is the right fit for them. This creates a safe space for students to try it out and see if it is something they can be passionate about."

Participants will receive a t-shirt, a practice kit, and lunch. Interested students should contact their high school guidance counselor or email nancy.wilson@kctcs.edu for an application. Space is limited to the first 20 applicants, but sessions may be added based on level of interest.

"Students can save a lot of time and energy by preparing early. There are courses at the high school or that can be taken through dual credit that can help them be ready to compete for the limited number of spots available in nursing programs" commented Dr. Lori Donahoo, OCTC's nursing program coordinator.

Masks are required on campus and social distancing protocols will be implemented. For more information please contact Nancy Wilson at 270-686-4581 or via email at nancy.wilson@kctcs.edu.
