OCTC's Rice Speech & Debate Society Wins State
Owensboro, KY (02/18/2021) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) Tammy M. Rice Speech & Debate Society won the Community Colllege State Championship in NPDA Debate, IPDA Debate, and individual events at the 2021 Kentucky Forensics Association (KFA) state tournament hosted virtually by Western Kentucky University (WKU) on February 12-13, 2021. OCTC also earned a second place overall honor, behind WKU, the top ranked program in the country.
Caleb Rush earned the Harlan Hamm Award as one of the top four outstanding forensics students in the Commonwealth. Rush also earned an eighth place Speaker award in IPDA debate.
Rush and David Daniel, a firstime competitor, collected other awards including tying for second place in Quadrathon, for students competing in 4 or more events. Daniel is also a freshman at Owensboro High School, and his father was on OCTC's team 15 years ago.
Coaches Dr. Bob Glenn and Brad Phelps assisted were excited by the results, Glenn added, "We are so pleased to be able to compete, it brings a sense of normalcy back to the semester. We are very proud of our contingent and the way they represented OCTC on-line this weekend at KFA."
The OCTC team will be hosting a digital speech and debate tournament on March 5 - 6, 2021. Anyone interested in judging during this online event should contact bobj.glenn@kctcs.edu for more information.
