OCTC Student Selected as 4H Emerald Award Finalist

Owensboro, KY (06/16/2020) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's Kara McFayden is a familar face around campus. She is an active student involved in the Student Government Association (SGA) and participating in many activities. In addition, she has been selected as one of 20 finalists that have interviewed for the presitgious 4-H Emerald Award.

According to Lindsey Dunn, Daviess County's Agent for 4-H Youth Development Education, "The Emerald Award is the highest honor in Kentucky 4-H's Achievement Program. Each year, four dedicated Kentucky 4-H members are selected for this honor through a rigorous application and interview process."

The Achievement Program is open to all 4-H'ers who may apply for the competitive levels of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald award levels. Participants at each level are judged based on their accomplishments across five categories: Leadership, Citizenship, Communications/Marketing, Community Service, and Participation. Dunn added, "The top applicants making it to the Gold and Emerald levels have proven to be engaged, well rounded 4-H members not only in their local communities but at the district and state levels as well."

To qualify for the Emerald Award, 4-H'ers must be at least a sophomore in high school, have reached non-competitive Level V and be chosen as one of the top 10 Gold Award winners for the current year or a past years' Gold Award recipient. The Gold Award is a competitive level of the Achievement Program that requires 4-H'ers to work with stakeholders in their community to identify a community issue and develop a solution. Each winner received a $1,000 scholarship to the 2014 National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. and $1,000 college scholarship.

OCTC is proud of Kara and all her accomplishments. She is slated to serve as President of the SGA for 2020-21.
