OCTC Students Earn $3,500 with 2nd Place at KY Pitch

Owensboro, KY (05/01/2019) — Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) student Prem Patel, and his brother, Owensboro Innovation Academy (OIA) student, Krishna Patel, earned second place in the area's regional KY Pitch competition with their "Electra Pops" product securing a place in the state level finals held April 27 at Centre College in Danville, KY. OCTC's team earned the 2nd place award in the statewide Business Model category and the $3,500 cash award.

KY Pitch, is Kentucky's largest collegiate business pitch competition formerly known as Idea State U, and as in past years, winning teams were selected within two sectors: a Business Plan and a Business Model. The winning team in the Business Plan category received a $7,500 cash prize, while runners-up earned $5,000 and third place received $3,500. The winning Business Model team took home $5,000, followed by $3,500 for second place and $1,500 for the third place team.

The brothers developed this frozen healthy treat designed to replace electrolytes and promote hydration. They noticed that most sporting events had plentiful snack options during athletic events but not all those options were fortifying. They even sought to make their product environmentally friendly by utilizing seeded wooden sticks that will grow if planted.

Prem is a graduate of Apollo High School and is a first year student at OCTC. Prem has completed the EMT program at OCTC and is pursuing a major in Business. Krishna will graduate from OIA in 2020 and plans to attend OCTC and then transfer to the University of Kentucky. Accompanying the team as faculty representatives for coaching and support are Mary Kinney and Dr. Bob Glenn.

"These guys just did fantastic! Being the only community and technical college to make it to state was amazing, and earning second place was phenomenal" added Glenn.
