OCTC to Host Common Read Author Virtually

Owensboro, KY (11/02/2020) — Owensboro Community & Technical College is continuing the tradition of an author's visit in conjunction with the campus wide Common Read, but this semester the event will be hosted virtually. On Thursday, November 5 at 11 a.m. the college will feature Kentucky author Kim Michele Richardson on a Zoom event. OCTC's Common Read novel this semester, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson is a New York Times bestseller and one of "Oprah's Buzziest Books." It "was inspired by the real life 'blue people' of Kentucky, and the fierce, brave Packhorse Librarians who used the power of literacy to overcome bigotry, and fear during the Great Depression." Themes and subjects include history such as the Works Progress Administration, The Civilian Conservation Corps, and the packhorse librarians. Cultural themes are relevant to current events and include Appalachian culture, coal mining, racism and prejudice, natural remedies, and literacy.

About the Author

Kim Michele Richardson, has written four works of historical fiction, and a bestselling memoir, The Unbreakable Child. Her latest multi-award winning novel, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a NYT, L.A.
