Second Chance Success

X2

Owensboro, KY (01/30/2020) — John and Kalyn Ward attempted college before but didn't find much success. However, they are finding success this time as they complete college together. Kalyn enjoys taking classes with her husband, who she affectionately refers to as her "study buddy." They hold each other accountable and encourage each other to do their best.

John started at Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) in 2003 as an agriculture major. After three semesters, he changed his major to construction, which slowed down his progress toward graduating. John felt he had no direction and became frustrated. He didn't have a steady advisor who could guide him. John admits that his lack of knowledge about attending college, the impact of switching majors, and not understanding what classes counted toward the various degree requirements impeded his success. He eventually earned an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in General Occupational Technology Studies in 2007 and went into the workforce.

Kalyn took one semester of classes in 2014 and quit due to feeling overwhelmed and confused. As the first female in her family to complete high school, she had no support in navigating college. Therefore, she felt as if college wasn't for her, so she joined the workforce. After a few years, she realized she would not get promoted unless she had a college degree. By that time, she and John had met and married. He had been in the workforce for twelve years without any advancement. They both decided to return to OCTC to better their careers.

Kalyn nervously walked back into the classroom in August of 2018. However, this time she found support. Someone from TRiO Student Support Services visited one of her classes and explained the services they provide. Kalyn knew she wanted to become a member because she needed the extra support. She convinced John to join as well when he returned to fulfill general education requirements needed to earn an Associate in Science degree.

Their second attempts at college proved to be much better. Kalyn enjoys college this time. She feels that more resources are available to students, people stress the importance of asking for help if it is needed, and instructors are more interactive. John admits that he was skeptical about returning to college and didn't trust anyone. However, TRiO has made his college experience "110% better this time." The fun events, computer lab, tutors, workshops, and support provided by the TRiO staff have provided extra resources that they both needed. The couple will happily walk across the stage in May completing their Associate in Science degrees.

TRiO offices are located in the upper level of the Learning Resource Center, for more information about TRiO please contact Mary Bruner at mary.bruner@kctcs.edu.
