Brian Striplin Continues to Set Higher Goals

by Ceary Thomas

Owensboro, KY (06/07/2019) — At the age of thirty-five, Brian Striplin completed his GED through Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) SkillTrain Adult Education program. Striplin says overcoming the fear of completing an education as an adult was his largest hurdle. After completing his GED, he set out to find employment. He felt he was not reaching his full potential and made the decision to set his goals higher and continue his education. Because he enjoys working with his hands, and he was curious about the different aspects of industrial maintenance, he decided to pursue an education in Industrial Maintenance Technology and returned to OCTC.

While he was already enrolled in classes, Striplin's employer, National Office Furniture in Fordsville, KY, approached him about joining OCTC's GO FAME program which allowed them to sponsor his education. His employer saw his potential and wanted to help him earn a degree and provide for his family. He earned an Associate in Applied Science in Industrial Maintenance Technology (IMT) degree in May 2019 through the GO FAME work and learn program. He feels the individual attention he received from his instructors, and the sense of community that he felt on campus, helped him to be successful in earning his degree.

Striplin plans to continue his education in the fall and pursue a second degree in Electrical Technology. To hear more about Striplin's experience and why he chose OCTC, watch his interview here: https://youtu.be/QdCWMKqaBbs
