Faculty Team Up For Environmental Rescue

Owensboro, KY (03/28/2019) — Working and studying on Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) 100 acre campus with a certified Wildlife Area has many advantages, one of which instills a more acute awareness of the environment. Today that awareness brought a student to Casey Hamilton's Education class with hopes of rescuing a robin. The bird was entangled in some plastic mesh.

Hamilton took scissors hoping to free the bird, but they were unable to extract her from the plastic web. OCTC's resident nature guru, Dr. Micah Perkins was called to the scene. Perkins was able to pick up the bird and began to untangle her from the mesh while Hamilton cut the plastic as he indicated.

Always one to take advantage of a captive audience, Perkins shared with the students details about robins and the hazards of plastic to wildlife.

Perkins shared that the female robin had been picking feathers from her chest, so she either had already laid eggs or was near term to lay them.

The freed robin was able to fly away even with an injured foot, which Perkins relayed would heal with no problems. As soon as she flew away, her mate joined her, apparently watching the entire operation from the tree above!
