Nicholas Russell Becoming a Bearcat

TRiO Alumnus

by Mary Bruner

Owensboro, KY (05/10/2019) — Nicholas Russell graduated from OCTC in December 2018 with an Associate in Arts degree. He returned during the spring of 2019 to finish some prerequisite coursework needed before he transfers to Brescia University to pursue a degree in Accounting.

When asked why he chose OCTC, he quickly responded that the campus is close to his home, which allows him to stay connected with family, and the tuition is affordable, which helps him save some money while completing basic courses before transferring. He has enjoyed his experiences here and urges others to not overlook OCTC for their education: "A community college is better than a big university due to the class size. I've been in classes with ten to fifteen people. That lowers teacher to student ratio [provides me with extra support and attention]."

Nicholas credits Lindsey Greer, TRiO Student Support Services Advisor, with making his time at OCTC memorable. He and Lindsey have developed a close friendship during his time as a TRiO member. The two can often be found discussing music, running, and family. Lindsey was instrumental in helping him navigate his academic journey by researching Brescia's accounting degree requirements, explaining to him the coursework he could complete at OCTC prior to transferring, and accompanying him on a campus tour of Brescia.

Everyone at OCTC and the TRiO Student Support Services staff wish Nicholas all the best as he becomes a Brescia Bearcat in the fall. Watch Nicholas' video.
