OCTC Debate Team Competes in Multiple Tourneys
Owensboro, KY (11/02/2021) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's Speech & Debate Team competed in the T-Town Invitational Tournament hosted jointly by Tulsa Community College and Northeastern State University, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma on October 23, 2021. The tournament was live but held remotely utilizing YAATLY software, more than 20 colleges and universities competed.
OCTC debaters for this tournament included David Daniel a freshman from Owensboro, Kayla Mohon a freshman from Beaver Dam.
Daniel, who is co-enrolled at OCTC and Owensboro High School, compiled a 4-0 record in the preliminary debate rounds, advanced to the semi-finals in the Junior IPDA Debate Division before losing a competitive 2-1 decision to a speaker from Valdosta State. In prelims, Daniel defeated teams from Kansas Wesleyan, Central Oklahoma State, and Valdosta State. Daniel also earned a second-place speaker award.
Mohon, competed in the Impromptu and Extemporaneous speaking divisions.
Online tournaments allowed the team to attend multiple events, OCTC's Jenna Faucheux, a freshman from Owensboro competed in the Persuasive Speaking division in an Online Asynchronous Tournament Series (OATS #2) hosted by Eastern Illinois University. In this format students must record and submit videos after subject matter prompts are posted. Feedback is provided after the judging takes place.
