OCTC Events for Black History Month

Ali Presentation, Art & Library Exhibits

by Bernie Hale

Owensboro, KY (02/09/2022) — Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC) is hosting a series of events in honor of Black History Month.

In addition to a library display, an art exhibition is planned with K.O. Lewis, and the presentation, "Muhammad Ali: A Legacy of Advocacy and Service" by Matt Alschbach will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 24 in Blandford Lecture Hall, located in the Humanities building, on the main campus at 4800 New Hartford Road. The presentation will be in person, or available via Facebook Live at facebook.com/OwensboroCTC.

"We were so pleased with the attendance and feedback we received at the Martin Luther King day event we want to keep the momentum going and open these events to the community" added Sharmy Davis, OCTC's Directory of Diversity.

OCTC faculty Matt Alschbach examines what Ali stood for and how he capitalized on his celebrity to bring attention to causes he felt worthy. "Muhammad Ali was more than just a great sports figure; he was a man of principle and practice" commented Alschbach. He added, "I've always enjoyed teaching KY History and he is a prominent figure that we explore."

Alschbach has taught history courses for a decade in both Southern California and at OCTC. He currently teaches U.S. History, Kentucky History, and WWII History at OCTC. Alschbach holds a master's degree in history from San Diego State University, and a bachelor's degree in history from California State University San Marcos.

The event is free and open to the public, currently masks are required in campus buildings. For more information about the event, please contact Bernie Hale at 270-686-4506 or bernie.hale@kctcs.edu.
