OCTC Hosting Summer Camps
STEAM Camp, Healthcare Careers Camp, & Level Up Coming This Summer!
Owensboro, KY (05/25/2022) — Owensboro Community & Technical College will be hosting a variety of summer camps and activities starting in June. To kick off the summer, OCTC will be offering a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) Camp for middle and high school students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7. STEAM Camp projects include training a robot to pick and place a 3-D printed object, exploring engineering concepts of design and maintenance through rocketry, campers will create and launch a rocket, and learn easy printmaking techniques, so campers can take home copies of their work. The camp will be held at OCTC's Downtown Campus, 1501 Frederica Street, and the Main Campus at 4800 New Hartford Road. OCTC's STEAM Camp is funded in part by a grant received through the Alcoa Foundation.
OCTC's Level Up Camp is for graduating high school seniors and is scheduled for June 6-13. This free program is geared toward those who plan on attending OCTC as freshmen this fall, but may not be exactly sure of their future career path. OCTC's Level Up Camp will meet on Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and successful participants will earn a free college credit hour for completing the program. Upon successful completion of the program, the participants become eligible for an OCTC scholarship of up to $3,000 for the fall semester. Students will also get to participate in a STEAM-focused behind-the-scenes tour of the Holiday World theme park in Santa Claus, IN. This project was funded by the U.S. Department of Education with the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) funds, authorized by Section 18002 of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) to provide emergency aid to states to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting June 21-23, students of elementary and middle school age are encouraged to take part in the OCTC Healthcare Career Camp. The academy will include hands-on activities with each of the allied health programs, radiography, nursing, medical assisting, surgical technology, and paramedicine. Guest speaker, Delanor Manson will share her experiences as a woman of color in the allied health field, and a showcase event presented by the participants will wrap up the academy. This camp will be held at OCTC's Main Campus at 4800 New Hartford Road starting from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The healthcare career exploration summer camp is funded in part by a grant from the Owensboro Health Community Health Investments Grant Program.
