OCTC Offering Spanish for Health Professionals
Owensboro, KY (10/03/2023) — Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) is proud to announce a new course offered locally, Spanish for Health Professionals. SPA 151U is a 3-credit hour course that will be taught in a hybrid (in-person and online) format. The course is scheduled for Wednesdays from 2:00 - 3:45 p.m. and will be taught by Dr. Ramon Muniz.
The course will teach Spanish terminology and basic grammar for use in relating to medical patients, including vocabulary for diagnosis and treatment.
Pre-requisite is a working knowledge of healthcare terminology or experience and prior college or high school Spanish or other experience with the Spanish language roughly equivalent to one semester of college study. Instructor permission with healthcare experience/track preferred.
Dr. Ramon Muniz is a native of Cuba and is a full-time Spanish instructor for OCTC. He attended Florida International University (FIU), where he earned his Ph.D. in Spanish and taught at FIU from 2016 to 2021.
Dr. Muniz commented, "I like teaching about language and culture, while at the same time, I can help break down boundaries and walls. This course will help healthcare professionals be able to relate and communicate to Spanish-speaking cultures."
"We are proud to be able to offer this course, and we hope this course will attract current nursing students as well as those healthcare professionals who are already employed in the field," added OCTC President Dr. Scott Williams.
