OCTC's Automotive & Diesel Programs Re-accredited by ASE

New for 2024, attend classes 2 days per week, hybrid/EV focus

by Bernie Hale

Owensboro, KY (03/11/2024) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) Automotive Technology and Diesel Technology programs have been granted re-accreditation by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation. ASE is the industry-standard across the nation. Programs are accredited through a five-step process engineered to evaluate the program's structure, processes, resources, materials, and mission. The accreditation process is valuable as it is a third-party assurance that institutions are preparing students for today's careers, and employers can be confident that graduates from ASE programs are well prepared for the field and arms students with the confidence to succeed.

OCTC President Dr. Scott Williams commented, "ASE is the gold standard for the automotive industry. To have this certification adds value for our students and ensures that our program stays in tune with the changes happening in the field."

To complete the process programs must formally review program standards, complete a program evaluation with the assistance of advisory committee members, undergo an ASE Foundation review of the program evaluation, and participate in an on-site evaluation. After industry requirements are met, the program is awarded ASE Accreditation for 5 years from the date of accreditation/renewal of accreditation. To maintain accreditation status during this period, programs are asked to review their activities to ensure that standards are being upheld. The ASE Education Foundation requires that programs complete the 2 -year compliance review to remain accredited. The compliance review is designed to help the program determine needed improvements prior to the 5-year renewal process.

"We always believed our programs were top-notch but going through this process makes sure we hold ourselves and our students to a higher standard of excellence and gives students an advantage when they are ready to enter the workforce" added Billie Harris, OCTC's program coordinator for the Automotive and Diesel programs.

OCTC Automotive and Diesel programs are accredited through 2029.

For classes that begin in August of 2024 the program is piloting a work and learn model, with students attending classes for only two days a week. Allowing students more opportunities to work while attending school. Students can focus on vehicle electronics and hybrid/EV technologies and build a full course schedule coming to campus only two days a week.
