OCTC's Embry Earns Certification

by Bernie Hale

Owensboro, KY (02/08/2021) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) instructor and program coordinator for the Medical Information Technology (MIT) and Administrative Office Technology (AOT) programs, Julie Embry, recently received certification as an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) approved ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer. This certification qualifies her as one of only fourteen, in the state of Kentucky.

"The certification benefits students because it directly aligns with what we teach and it makes me a better instructor for my students," added Embry.

She commented, "You have to have a minimum of five years' experience and hold a CCS credential before you can even apply for this program. I even had to pass a coding test before taking the course."

AHIMA is the leading voice and authority in health information, wherever it is found. Our people work at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and business. While our patients don't often see us, we see our patients in a way no other healthcare professional does. That is because AHIMA-certified professionals ensure that sensitive health stories remain accurate, accessible, protected and complete-at all times. As the global nonprofit association of health information professionals, our mission of empowering people to impact health is a prescient rallying cry during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Embry is an alumnus of OCTC earning an Associate in Arts from OCTC. She also holds additional professional credentials from the American Academy of Professional Coders as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and AHIMA as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).

Embry's previous experience includes various and extensive medical office settings, including owning her company, hosting courses and tutoring sections for national coding exams. She has a wide range of skills and wants to help the students build a broad knowledge base, so they will be well prepared in a multitude of office settings. Embry has taught as an adjunct instructor in the MIT program at OCTC since 2017 and became coordinator in 2018.

Both the MIT and AOT programs offer associate in applied science degrees and have certificate options. For more information on the MIT and AOT programs please contact Embry at julie.embry@kctcs.edu or call 270-686-4593.
