OCTC Speech & Debate Team concludes 2021-2022 season with triumphs at Spring Climb the Mountain Online Tournament and Florida Atlantic Owl Online Speech Invitational
Owensboro, KY (04/26/2022) — Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) speech and debate team, the Tammy M. Rice Debate Society, competed in their final tournaments of the 2021-2022 season at the Climb the Mountain online debate tournament hosted by Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and at the Florida Atlantic Owl Online Speech Invitational out of Boca Raton, Florida.
David Daniel compiled a 3-0 win-loss record in preliminaries at the Climb the Mountain tournament. He was the top seed advancing to the semi-finals of the Junior Varsity Division in the IPDA Debate. Daniel was recognized as the Top Speaker in the division. He earned the Championship award.
At the Florida Atlantic tournament, Kayla Mohon earned third place honors in Persuasive Speaking and fourth place in Impromptu Speaking. OCTC students Laura Flahardy and Josephine Gesser tied for fourth place in Persuasion.
During the 2021-2022 season, OCTC speakers earned over 50 individual awards and several Team Sweepstakes Awards, including the Kentucky Forensics Association State Championship in Debate and IEs (2-year division). The team was led by Caleb Rush, David Daniel, Heaven Taylor, and Kayla Mohon.
Coach Bob Glenn said, "Despite dealing with covid for the last two years, our students have overcome and competed at an extremely high level online. I am very proud of their hard work, commitment, and accomplishments this year. They have been a joy to work with; they have represented our college superbly this season."
