OCTC Teams Up For Face Shield Project

DCEMA

Owensboro, KY (04/09/2020) — Local volunteers spent the morning at Owensboro Community & Technical College's (OCTC) HVAC lab assembling much needed face shields. The face shield is one item that was unavailable locally, but needed for area healthcare facilities and by first responders.

Daviess County Emergency Management Agency put out a call for help to make the face shields Wednesday morning. Daviess County Emergency Management Agency Director, Andy Ball said the need for them is higher right now, but they haven't been able to get their hands on any yet.

"I figured why not see what we could do here locally," he said. "I've got about 500 I need to make for various agencies like nursing homes, urgent care and first responders."

OCTC offered up the lab as a production space, and Ball purchased the needed materials locally. Material included thick transparency paper, elastic and other necessary supplies. The group utilized social distancing protocols to complete the tasks.

"We knocked them out very quickly," Ball said.

"Community really is our middle name, and anything we can do to help our community, particularly with medical PPE during this crisis is a great demonstration of how we really are all in this together" added Scott Williams, OCTC President.

All the masks will be used in Daviess County, Kentucky.
