Attended OCTC's Student Fest Fall '19 event held on OCTC's Main Campus. Students were able to explore different services provided by OCTC, as well as talk with representatives from community organizations that provide resources to OCTC students.

Members heard from a panel of faculty members about faculty expectations, the importance of being engaged in class, and how to self-advocate. Following the panel, members heard from Becky Hodskins concerning what it means to be a member of TRiO Student Support Services and the various services and opportunities available to members. Lindsey Greer provided a list of important academic dates relating to financial aid and registering for next semester.

Student attended a mental health presentation - "Alcoholism, Warning Signs, Disease Prevention & Local Resources," sponsored by OCTC's Counseling Center. Kristin Gedney spoke about the effects of alcoholism, warning signs, and resources to help get you back on track.

Students received valuable information regarding available semester activities and events and also academic resources, such as an advising syllabus and a college lingo handout. Additionally, virtual reality software was demonstrated as another available tool used to assist students in learning various concepts, exploring careers, and as a means of relaxation

Managing one's time is not as easy as it sounds. A day planner can be an essential tool because it allows a place to keep short-term and long-term schedules. Learning to effectively use a planner can benefit students because they can remember their responsibilities, manage their time, stay organized, and plan. Students who attended this workshop received an academic planner and were instructed on how to make the most of using it.

By attending this multicultural event on August 17, 2019, students were able to visit over 30 informative booths representing various cultures and heritages, witness numerous demonstrations and live entertainment, as well as try different food.

Students attended OCTC's Pathfinder Day - a new student orientation day held on OCTC's Main Campus. New students were able to find their classes, visit the cyber center, have their student ID made, explore the campus and much more in one family-friendly fun day!

Each year the Owensboro Rotary Club recognizes outstanding local high school and college graduates through the Larry Hager Award. Ms. Kaylee Meador was selected as the 2018-19 graduate at a special Rotary Awards Luncheon this month. Students attended the Celebration of the History and Creation of OCTC's Virginia Miles Nature Center. Featuring Dr. Kit Gallagher and her new book, "Creating an Outdoor Classroom Wildlife Refuge at Owensboro Community and Techinal College" on April 9, 2019.

Tammy Rice discussed various aspects of culture and subcultures, especially commonly accepted practices, food, and communication.

It takes skill to have the ability to organize and plan how to divide your time between specific activities and responsibilities. Good time management allows you to work smarter - not harder - so that you can be productive with your time and get the most out of it with minimal stress. Personality makes you unique and plays a major role in how you perceive and handle things. This workshop focuses on the 16 personality types, explaining characteristics of each type and suitable careers for each type. Presented on March 20, 2019 by Lindsey Greer

During this Peer Panel, TRiO members who are ready to graduate will answer questions regarding their success, explain any obstacles they faced and how they overcame them, and provide resources that they used to get to the point where they are ready to walk the graduation line.

Students attended a syllabus review grant committee meeting to provide input for OCTC's Grant Committee on March 8, 2019.

Students participated in a group project by creating information posters regarding important women in history, on March 7, 2019.

Owensboro Realtors Association hosted "Adulting 101: Navigating Mortgages, Home Ownership, and The Biggest Financial Decision of Your Life" on the main campus, on March 25, 2019.

Students attended a discussion and reading by the Spring 19 Common Reading author, Nnedi Okorafor, on March 21, 2019.

"Come As You Are" featured speakers from Owensboro's chapter of Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous.

Students attended a presentation by Marsha Norman, author of the Fall 2018 Common Read - Getting Out.

Attended a student discussion with OCTC President Dr. Scott Williams. Sponsored by the OCTC Student Government Association (SGA). February 21, on the Main Campus.

TRiO member Nicholas Russell presented a workshop informing students about three different websites they should visit while searching for scholarship opportunities.

FYE students participated in a stress buster day activity.

Students went on an adventure and assisted with the Daviess County Audubon Bird Count at Virginia Miles Nature Center.

Research on "learned helplessness" shows that when people feel like they have no control over what happens, they tend to simply give up and accept their fate. Don't fall into that trap! Dr. Ed Morris will teach you ways to overcome learned helplessness.
