Owensboro Community & Technical College is a public, two-year, open admissions college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is one of the sixteen colleges that make up the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS). The college values innovation, is focused on student learning, and is responsive to economic trends.  

Most OCTC students are from the counties of Daviess, Ohio, Hancock and McLean in Kentucky, but many others travel from elsewhere in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

3rd Annual Girl's Empowerment Trail Blazer Event featuring Catrina Kidd

Students attended the 3rd Annual Girl's Empowerment Trail Blazer Event hosted by the OCTC Foundation, Inc. Featuring DIY Network's Catrina Kidd, host of the popular show "Texas Flip N Move." A successful entrepreneur and longtime do-it-yourselfer, Kidd has a strong history of spectacular remodels. She previously helped out as a contractor for the Snow Sisters and has now teamed up with Casey Hester. She is also vice president for a restaurant group called Yucatan Taco Stand.

Program Applicability

FAFSA will pay only for the courses that apply toward a student's major. Therefore, it is important to know what courses can be taken for each major. Students will be shown how to run the academic requirement report found in Student Self-Service through MyPath to see if courses are permissible.

Counseling Center Sponsored Presentation: Stress & Time Management

Students attended a session on stress and time management. The session included tips on decreasing anxiety through increasing healthy study, time management, and organizational skills. The session was led by OCTC's Pre-Employment Transition Specialist.

Students attended a session on self-defense and crime prevention training. The session included tips on improving one's safety by learning practical techniques and implementing effective communication. Detectives Bradley Youngman and Jared Ramsey of the Daviess County Sherrif's Department will presented.

Holiday Spending Tips

This workshop focused on ways to avoid overspending during the holidays. Suggestions include setting a budget, using price comparison before buying, making gifts, reducing the number of people one gives gifts, and creating personlized coupon books for services the giver can provide, such as babysitting, cooking a meal, running errands, etc.

TRiO Bonfire and Scary College Stories

At our annual bonfire, we shared scary college stories, explaining what could happen if students don't meet with an advisor or choose not to listen to advice on what courses to take, the horrors of wasting financial aid monies, the negative impact of not applying for FAFSA early, the consequences of not registering for classes early, and the dreaded failing classes or low GPAs due to not seeking help through tutoring and other academic resources.

Learn How to Save a Life: PTSD & Suicide Prevention

We may meet people every day who are helpless and hopeless, some with thoughts of suicide. Students attended a presentatiion about learning how to recognize the warning signs that everyone should know, how to ask the "suicide" question, how to find local resources, how to keep the person at risk safe and get them help. Taught by a US Army suicide intervention Master trainer and veteran. Sponsored by OCTC Common Reading.

Fall '19 Common Read Author's Visit: Laura McBride

We Are Called to Rise, by Laura McBride, is the Fall '19 Common Reading novel. The novel is set in Las Vegas, Nevada and follows four divergent narrators with interwoven plot lines. The characters include CASA workers, a young veteran with PTSD, a divorcee, and an immigrant family. The central cataclysmic event in the novel was inspired by a real life event the author only knew of, but was deeply affected by, and used it as a catalyst for this fictional novel. Students attended a presentation by Ms. McBride on OCTC's Main Campus.
