OCTC HOSTS YOUTH LEADERS IN NEW INNOVATION LAB
Owensboro, KY (03/25/2019) — Owensboro Community and Technical College hosted 11 youth leaders from the Owensboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 21, 2019 in the college's new Innovation Lab located at the Downtown Campus,1501 Frederica Street, Owensboro. The youth participated in an "Introduction to Manufacturing" workshop as part of OCTC's National Science Foundation-funded project to advance females in manufacturing. This initiative called Go Females!, seeks to recruit more females into GO FAME and to prepare female incumbent workers for career advancement opportunities.
One of the major recruiting activities for the Go Females! project includes the "Introduction to Manufacturing" workshops for young people and adults to learn more about manufacturing. The centerpiece of the workshops is the Festo Cyber Physical (CP) Smart Factory simulator. Participants get a chance to learn more about the smart factory simulator and its integrated robotic capabilities. This hands-on workshop gives participants a chance to control a robot and to participate in a virtual welding activity. Led by OCTC employees Amanda Saam and Tyler Ashton, the workshops feature problem-solving activities and fun manufacturing simulations.
