Owensboro Community & Technical College student Kaylee Meador has been named a 2019 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and has earned a $1,000 scholarship.    Meador is an OCTC Early College student, a Daviess County High School student enrolled full time at OCTC. She is on track to graduate in May with an associate degree and high school diploma. Meador is the president of OCTC's Student Government Association, represents students on the OCTC Board of Directors, is the president of OCTC's Phi Theta Kappa chapter, and is a Hager Civic Engagement Scholar.    The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.

The Project Management Workshop will meet Wednesday, May 8, and Thursday, May 9, from 8:30am – 4:30pm.  The workshop will be held in Room 8 of Owensboro Community and Technical College’s Downtown Campus. Located at 1501 Frederica Street.  The cost is $1,650 per person and includes all materials. The Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC) Common Reading selection for the spring 2019 semester is, Binti by Nnedi Okorafor. Dr. Okorafor earned a Hugo and Nebula Award for this novella first published in 2015, it is a Tor.com book published by Tom Doherty Associates. The author will be at OCTC on Thursday, March 21 at 12:30 p.m. in Blandford Lecture Hall to do a presentation and book signing. Blandford Lecture Hall is located in the Humanities building at 4800 New Hartford Road, Owensboro. That day from 5-6 p.m. the college will host a "Meet and Greet" reception in honor of Dr. Okorafor in the Industry Innovation Center. The events are free and open to the public.

The HR Certification Prep Course will meet Thursday evenings from April 11 – July 25 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Classes will be held in Room 8 of Owensboro Community and Technical College’s Downtown Campus located at 1501 Frederica Street.  The cost is $1,500 per person and includes both print and online curriculum. Some Kentucky companies may qualify for TRAINS funds to help cover some of the cost. Across the United States this year only fifteen Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members are named as Guistwhite Scholars.  Owensboro Community & Technical College’s Brooklyn Michelle Knight was one of the students selected from more than 2,000 applicants. She and each of the recipients will receive a $5,000 scholarship for baccalaureate studies.     Knight is an Early College student in OCTC’s Discover College program. She currently serves as Vice President of the OCTC Student Government Association and as Vice President of Scholarship of the college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter. She completed her first OCTC class in ninth grade, and in her six semesters thus far, has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is one of two National Merit Semifinalists from Apollo High School, is an OCTC Hager Scholar, and one of only 32 students statewide nominated for the KCTCS All-Academic Team. Brooklyn plans to attend the University of Kentucky after graduating from OCTC in May 2019 as a Biology and Pre-Med major.

While the number of female welders across the country has grown in recent years, only 24% of welders in the United States are women. Kelsey Lyons, a 2018 graduate of Owensboro Community & Technical College refused to let the odds keep her from following her dreams of being a welder. After graduating high school, Lyons enrolled at OCTC and in two years earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Welding Technology.     On January 2, 2019, Lyons was one of five OCTC graduates to begin their career at Modern Welding Company in Owensboro, Kentucky. While many OCTC welding graduates have launched their careers at Modern Welding, Kelsey Lyons set precedent by being the first female welder hired in the 85-year history of the company. OCTC's Counseling Center will host an information session for students called “Come As You Are” on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 11 a.m. The session will feature local speakers in recovery from food addiction and is held in conjunction with National Eating Disorder week.  The sessions are part of a Healthy You, Healthy Campus series and will be held in the Chandler Conference Center (ATC 107) located in the Advanced Technology Center, on OCTC's Main Campus at 4800 New Hartford Road. The events are free and open to the public.

About Owensboro Community and Technical College

Owensboro Community & Technical College is a public, two-year, open admissions college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is one of the sixteen colleges that make up the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS). The college values innovation, is focused on student learning, and is responsive to economic trends.  

Most OCTC students are from the counties of Daviess, Ohio, Hancock and McLean in Kentucky, but many others travel from elsewhere in Kentucky and southern Indiana.
